TMJ Pain and Jaw Issues

There’s a good chance that if you have jaw pain, I’m going to pop on a glove when we meet. Why? Because I’ll more than likely need to work on all the muscles of your temporamandibilar joint, inside your jaw, also known as your TMJ to relieve your symptoms. It’ll be a little strange but can also be highly effective!

When the TMJ and it’s surrounding soft tissues are aggravated, you can experience:

  • Localised jaw pain
  • Tooth, mouth and cheek pain
  • Headaches, particularly in your temple areas
  • Referred ear pain
  • Facial pain
  • Restricted range of motion in your jaw
  • Inability to eat hard or super chewy foods
  • A joint that “pops” in and out
  • Locked jaw
  • Clenching and grinding of the teeth

It’s always important to seek that advice of a trusted dental professional in the event of any jaw pain, especially so they can first rule out any dental or tooth pathology that could be causing your issues.

TMJ and jaw issues can come from problems with the actual joint itself such as hyper mobility or alignment issues. It can also come from stress, overchewing as well as chronic clenching and grinding of your teeth (or bruxism). I’ve seen some patients with TMJ and jaw pain after extensive dental procedures, where the muscles surrounding the area became inflamed, tight or irritated as an unwanted side effect.

Jaw pain can range from mild to severe but it can interfere with a lot of daily activities, such as eating, talking, smiling and mouth control. The headaches can also be strong and persistent.

The muscles surrounding the jaw area can take on a huge amount of load but when they’re misbehaving, they can cause a whole lot of issues. Soft tissue release work in this area can restore range of motion, reduce pain and reduce unwanted symptoms that arise.

If you or someone you know is experiencing this nasty type of pain, feel free to get in touch.
