Magnesium – the “miracle mineral”

What’s all the fuss about MAGNESIUM?

It’s often hailed “the miracle mineral” because it does so many good things for your body!

When it comes to muscle and nerve health, reducing inflammation and even preventing migraines, it’s a pretty important mineral for your body to have. In fact, every cell in your body needs magnesium to function.

Magnesium is a mineral found in the earth, sea, plants and animals. About 60% of your body’s magnesium is found in your bones, while the rest is in your muscles, soft tissues and body fluids.

One of magnesium’s main roles is acting as a co-factor or “helper molecule” in the biochemical reactions that your body does each and every day.

In fact, it’s involved in more than 600 reactions in your body, including:

  • Energy creation: Helps convert food into energy.
  • Protein formation: Helps create new proteins from amino acids.
  • Gene maintenance: Helps create and repair DNA and RNA.
  • Muscle movements: Is part of the contraction and relaxation of muscles.
  • Nervous system regulation: Helps regulate neurotransmitters, which send messages throughout your brain and nervous system.

Unfortunately, studies suggest that at least 50% of people get less than the recommended daily amount of magnesium (1).

So if you’re not getting enough magnesium, what can you do about it?

You could certainly start by including some magnesium rich foods in your diet (dark chocolate anyone??). These might include:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Spinach
  • Dark chocolate
  • Black beans
  • Quinoa
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Avocado
  • Mackerel
  • Salmon

Alternatively, you can take a magnesium supplement. These can come in tablet or powder form and should be a good, high quiality brand to ensure your body gets the most out of it.

As always, have a chat to me or a suitable health professional before starting to take any new supplements.
