In the clinic, I see a range of children’s issues. Some of them are acute injuries that have just happened recently, such as
- sprained joints
- sporting
injuries - pulled muscles
- pinched nerves
- muscle tightness
However, some of the issues I see are
- ongoing chronic pain
- headaches and migraines
- growing pains
- back and neck pain
- postural problems
- pain caused by a medical condition
There are certainly a number of soft tissue conditions that only occur in childhood. Many of these conditions will eventually be outgrown, such a Sever’s Disease of the leg and Osgood-Schlatters of the knee, however, they can cause a significant amount of pain and restrictions in the meantime. They often affect a child’s participation in all the fun things that a kid should be doing.
As an OT, I always want to see a child running, jumping, playing and climbing as their little bodies are designed to, rather than being restricted because of pain and injuries.
