Calf stretches

How do YOU stretch YOUR calves?

About 90% of people will stretch their calf muscles like the first photo… BUT that only gets one part of your calf muscles, known as the gastrocnemius muscle. It’s only doing half the job!

Make sure you add in the second position as well (bending the back knee) so you get the long lost other half of your calf muscles, the soleus muscle.

It’s these two muscles together that make up your calves, so it’s super important to stretch both of them to keep your calves happy.

These calf stretches can be a great tool to use for calf tightness, shin splints, plantar fascia pain, after running and jumping and to improve ankle mobility.

Some tips:
Don’t “bounce” these stretches, take them nice and slow. Hold for 30 seconds on each stretch before swapping to the other leg. And remember to breathe deeply!

As always, check with me or a suitable health professional for advice if you’re not sure about which stretches are best for you personally.
