Now that’s a cankle!
The things that can happen when you fall down the edge of a riverbank…
Acute ankle injuries, particularly ankle sprains, can end up looking like a very swollen cankle with some new purple, blue and black colouring to match.
Beneath the surface, a rolled ankle is often stretched or torn ligaments, particularly to the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL). The bruising and swelling rarely matches up to where the damage actually occurred. However, sometimes there can also be damage to other tissues and structures too. These type of injuries need prompt attention.
and managing the volume of swelling, amount of weight bearing and return to daily activities in the first few days and weeks is really important! We also need to assess the damage and plan for repairs ahead.
First step in this ankle is to reduce the pain and swelling with manual techniques as well as doing some home work to keep the swelling at bay over the next few days. I’m not going to lie, I do love a good cankle! Thankfully, this one is only temporary…
