As a registered occupational therapist, I am pleased to be able to offer comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments and reports. These are often required for NDIS participants, those currently applying to the NDIS or for medico-legal reasons.
This service is available throughout the Perth metro area as well as regional and remote areas of WA.
What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
Your functional capacity refers to your ability to do your daily tasks and activities. A Functional Capacity Assessment is an assessment that looks in depth at how your disability has an impact on your day-to-day life across key areas such as mobility and movement, communication, social interaction, learning, working, self-care and self-management.
There are times in your disability journey where you may require one of these to be completed. They can help to ensure identify needs, funding requirements and services that will assist you to reach your goals in the future.
What is involved?
Assessments include face-to-face parts as well as communication with involved parties as required (with consent) and a thorough report that is provided to the participant and to the NDIA, insurers or any other authorised parties.
Functional Capacity Assessments are conducted by occupational therapists and usually involve:
- An on-site visit, usually in your home environment, talking with yourself and your family and supports. This is to gain a good understanding of what your goals are, what is important to you and what your daily needs are. Some of your day to day activities may also be observed to gain more information.
- A standardised set of tools are used in compliance with NDIS and other parties to gather information from yourself, your family and your supports
- A detailed report is then written about the support you need. They will also make recommendations about what other things may assist you to meet your goals
How long does it take?
A typical assessment will take around 10 hours to complete, although you are only needed to be present for approximately 2 hours of this. However, more complex or remote situations can take up to 15 hours.
