Piriformis syndrome is a condition that can easily be confused with sciatica, leg pain or even toe pain. It’s essentially an condition that has caused your piriformis muscle, a very small but very important muscle at the back of your buttock, to become very cranky!
The piriformis muscle can also irritate the nearby sciatic nerve and cause pain, numbness and tingling along the back of the leg and into the foot (similar to sciatic pain). Many people mistake it for sciatica when it’s quite different! There can be many reasons your piriformis muscle starts to misbehave like this, and part of your initial assessment should assess why this has happened in the first place. That way, it will heal quicker and you’ll avoid any future flares.
Treatment focuses on reducing your pain, getting you back to full function to do all the things you love doing and to prevent any future relapses
