Bursitis can happen anywhere in your body that a bursa resides – knees, hips, shoulders and the achilles tendon are some of the more common areas.
Essentially, bursitis is an inflamed and swollen bursa. But a bursa doesn’t usually swell for no reason and so effective treatment needs to address the reason they’ve been swelling to provide long lasting relief.
Shoulder bursitis can be tricky to treat, with cortisone injections, anti-inflammatories and rest usually being the first go-to suggestions. Unfortunately, once someone starts using the shoulder again, pain and symptoms will often return.
Rest, medications and injections only have a temporary effect on reducing the swelling in the bursa, rather than addressing the REASON for the bursitis occurring in the first place. Hence the relief from these things can often be minimal, or none at all!
Soft Tissue OTs look at what’s actually happening at the shoulder joint and why extra pressure is being put on the bursa (and surrounding rotator cuff muscles). We also look at aggravating movements or postures that you might be doing that are inhibiting your recovery. We treat the shoulder using hands-on techniques to address the cause of the bursitis and to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, improve range of motion long term – and get your shoulder back to doing all the things you want it to do, without the pain.
